Art inspires art: MARK ACETELLI

You've got to love it when an artist inspires you to create (even if in another art form).

Mark Acetelli, whom I met five years ago (interviewing him for the then-unpublished ART+living magazine), became a good friend of mine after we shared similarly passionate interest in the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anselm Kiefer, Julian Schnabel, Miles Davis, Alberto Giacometti and others. Before his wedding the other week, I was looking through his work and, noting the names of his pieces, started thinking about the stories and histories the titles told of.

There's no doubt that Mark's work invokes passion in the viewer. The depth of each piece is magnified by deeply worked canvases (which often contain liquid nails, gauze, opera programs, maps, nails, and many other found objects) and potential collectors experiencing his work often project themselves onto the works' often-faceless subjects.

After writing out the titles to about 75 of Acetelli's pieces, I moved some around and, using his words entirely, crafted a poem that seemed to not only tell the tale of Acetelli's oeuvre, but somewhat of his life through this period. The poem, which I've tentatively titled "Wanted" is set out below the pic of "Broken Wing" - if you prefer to hear me read it, just click the PLAY button at the bottom of this blog entry.

Wanted:

Five souls, three souls, lost souls, a lone soul
Profile of a man:
Last one standing, so far away, down on the upside
Gone

The waiting
Train kept a rollin' into the Unknown
Long way home
Wish you were here

Rain man, pray for rain
Blood on the tracks
Still here

Broken wing, mend
The forest up from the ashes

Medici, Alchemist, King of Thieves battle for your heart
Desire
But all I want is you.

Grace
Garden lust
Sacrifice
Soul to soul

Eyes of midnight watch over me, the Dreamer
Enduring desolation row immortality

Save the Queen, little wing
Go west
Believe many blessings
Sacred
Way into the sea

All things must pass
Ship of hope, hope
Medici's sunset, Monet's sunset, shine on

Gabriel, angel of peace by your side, still
At peace, peace now, peace within
Une Bellezza
Two lovers
Freedom unbound
Beloved truth

On my way home for the last time.
